ABOUT ORTHOTICS

WHAT ARE ORTHOTICS?
Orthotics are devices worn in your shoes that provide correction to your feet, helping them to function more efficiently. Poor foot function and alignment may be the cause of various pains such as foot pain, hip pain, knee pain and back pain.

Prescription orthotics may help relieve your pain be realigning and stabilizing the bones in your feet, restoring your natural walking pattern.

GAITSCAN & CLINICAL EVALUATION
Your foot is in contact with the ground for about 0.8 of a second when running. Capturing aberrant gait mechanics at this speed can be difficult with the naked eye. The GaitScan system records your timing sequences during gait as you walk or run across the pressure plate.

This technology allows the prescribing practitioner to evaluate the patient’s gait mechanics by recording foot pressure in a dynamic environment. A pressure plate records and stores pressure information 150 times per second acting like a slow motion camera for the feet. This information is instantly analyzed by state of the art hardware and software providing valuable information used to identify abnormal foot function, balance and sway.
We combine the GaitScan results with clinical findings from a health history and physical examination to determine if orthotics will help with your condition.

3D-CASTING
Custom orthotics are designed and ordered specifically for your foot. To ensure we build the most effective device it is necessary to take a non-weight bearing, 3D cast of your foot. At Bayside we use impression foam to capture the shape of your feet. The doctor will place your foot in a foam box and apply gentle pressure until an acceptable impression is achieved.
